How deep and heavy is the Heavy Duty Greenback Fleece?

The Original Heavy Duty Greenback has a 32–35mm pile and weighs 1500gsm (grams per square metre), against the 25–28mm pile and 1200gsm of standard Vetfleece. It is medical and veterinary grade, made in our Yorkshire mill to the same exacting standards required by the NHS. The extra depth and weight give a deeper, warmer, more cushioned bed that stands up to daily use in kennels, catteries and breeding kennels.

What makes the Heavy Duty different from the Original Greenback?

Three things. The pile is deeper, 32–35mm against 25–28mm; the fleece is heavier, 1500gsm against 1200gsm; and it is made to NHS standards. Both have the double-woven green backing that lets liquid drain through and helps prevent chewing, both come in the same 21 sizes, and both can be autoclaved or washed at 120°C. The Original is washed at 40°C for everyday care; the Heavy Duty goes on a wool cycle with a cool tumble dry.

Why is the backing green, and which way up does it go?

We add the green backing to distinguish our two main fleeces, Greenback and Non-Slip. It is double woven, which makes it tough and helps prevent the fleece being chewed, and it lets liquid pass straight through rather than holding it. Use it pile up and green backing down: the pile holds the warmth and the backing sits on the tray, bed base or absorbent pad. Look for our logo on the sewn-on washing label to be sure it is genuine Vetfleece.

Can I use the Heavy Duty Greenback for whelping, or for a sick or incontinent animal?

Yes. Professional breeders use it in the whelping box because it gives young puppies a dry, safe surface, and kennels and vets use it for sick and recuperating animals. Lay it over an absorbent pad, such as our washable Inconti-Pet pad: liquid drains down through the fleece and backing into the pad and the animal rests dry. The fleece is non-allergenic, non-toxic and non-irritant, and it does not harbour bacterial growth.

How do I wash the Heavy Duty Greenback Fleece?

Machine wash on a wool cycle and tumble dry on a cool setting, following the sewn-on washing label. For a thorough clean it can be autoclaved or washed at 120°C to kill bacteria, but frequent washing at that temperature shortens its lifespan, so save it for when hygiene demands it. It is quick drying. Do not bleach, iron or dry clean, and wash it in our laundry wash bag to keep hair and fibres out of your machine.

Can I cut the Heavy Duty Greenback to size without it fraying?

Yes. Measure the inside of the kennel bed, crate, cage or whelping box, choose the nearest size up, mark the line on the green backing with a marker pen and ruler, and cut. Sharp scissors work, and a Stanley knife along the ruler gives the cleanest edge through the deep pile. The fleece does not fray, so a large piece or a roll can be cut into liners for a whole block of kennels.

What sizes and colours does the Heavy Duty Greenback come in?

The same 21 ready-cut sizes as every Vetfleece, from 15in x 12in (37cm x 30cm) up to a 118in x 30in (300cm x 75cm) roll, with crate sizes such as 36in x 24in and 48in x 30in and the square whelping box sizes 24in x 24in, 36in x 36in and 48in x 48in in between. Larger pieces and bespoke shapes are available by phone or email. It comes in six plain colours: Blue, Brown, Charcoal, Green, Grey and White.

Who is the Heavy Duty Greenback for?

Kennels, catteries and professional breeders who use it as standard bedding for all their animals, veterinary practices, and any home with a determined chewer or a need for hot washing. It suits dogs, puppies, cats, kittens and small animals, and some of our customers use it as a horse blanket. This medical and veterinary grade fleece is made to the same exacting high standards as required by the NHS.

We have the green back added to distinguish between the two main fleeces we manufacturer, Greenback and Non-Slip. We recommend that it is washed on a wool cycle in your washing machine and on the cool setting to tumble dry. It can be autoclaved or washed at 120 degrees to kill any bacteria, but repeated washing at this temperature can reduce the fleece life span.
