What a Vetfleece roll is

All four fleeces come in the same 21 cut sizes, and the largest, 118in x 30in (300cm x 75cm), is the roll. Each link below opens the product with that size already selected.

Whichever you choose, the fleece is the same: non-allergenic, non-toxic and non-irritant, with a deep pile that holds warmth and lets liquid drain through.

Who buys vet bedding by the roll, and why

A roll of vet bed suits anyone with more than one sleeping area to line. Kennels and catteries use Vetfleece as standard bedding across a block of pens, and a roll cut across its width gives them matching mats from one piece. Breeders line the whelping box and the puppy pen from the same roll, and cut a small square for each puppy to take home so the smell of mum goes with it. Rescues, groomers and veterinary practices line runs, cages and recovery kennels and need spares for wash day. Multi-dog homes do the same: three crates, two baskets and the car boot, all from one piece.

What one 300 × 75 cm roll cuts into

Pieces are cut across the width of the roll, so every piece starts 75 cm wide and you choose the length.

You do not have to cut the whole roll the same way; two crate mats, a carrier piece and a few cage liners is a common split. For a piece narrower than 75 cm, cut it to length, then trim the width and keep the offcut.

Which fleece for which job

Greenback for whelping, sick animals and hot washing

The double-woven green backing lets fluids pass straight through. Over an absorbent pad, liquid drains into the pad while the pup or patient rests on a dry surface, which is why we recommend greenback for whelping and for sick or incontinent animals. It washes at 40°C day to day and takes much higher temperatures when a practice or kennel needs them. The whelping range has the pads, heat pads and boxes to go with it.

Non-slip for hard floors, crates and vans

The rubber backing grips wood, tile, laminate, crate trays and the floor of a van or car boot, so the mat stays put as your dog turns and settles. It is the roll for kennel corridors, transport crates and any pen with a smooth floor. The rubber does not let all the liquid through, and it should not be washed above 40°C, so where drainage or hot washing matters, choose greenback.

Heavy duty for the hardest wear

The Heavy Duty Greenback has our deepest pile, 32–35mm at 1500gsm, on the same tightly woven green back, which helps stop the fleece being chewed. It is the roll for boarding kennels, catteries and professional breeders, and for bedding that is washed hot and often.

How to cut and fit a roll

Vetfleece cuts to size without fraying, so a roll needs only a tape measure, a marker pen and sharp scissors. Measure the inside base of the crate, pen or bed, mark the line on the backing, and cut with the fleece face down so the blades run along the backing, not through the pile. Lay each piece pile side up; on a non-slip piece the ribbed rubber has to touch the floor to grip.

Washing pieces cut from a roll

Every piece cut from a vet bedding roll washes like any other Vetfleece: 40°C for everyday care, tumble dry on low or air dry, and no bleach, ironing or dry cleaning. Greenback can go up to the autoclavable standard of 120°C when a practice or kennel needs it, though washing that hot all the time will shorten its life; non-slip stays at 40°C or below to protect the backing. Which fleece should I buy by the roll for a kennel block?

For boarding kennels and catteries we recommend the Original Heavy Duty Greenback roll. Its 32–35mm pile at 1500gsm is our deepest and heaviest, the double-woven green back helps prevent chewing, and it can be washed at high temperatures when you need a deep clean. If the pens have smooth floors and the dogs slide about, a non-slip roll grips wood, tile and laminate, but it must be washed at 40°C or below.

How do I cut a vet bed roll to size?

Measure the inside base of the crate, pen or bed, then mark the line on the backing with a marker pen and a ruler or straight edge. Cut with the fleece face down using sharp scissors, so the blades run along the backing instead of through the pile; a Stanley knife on a board gives the straightest edge for a long run of pieces. Vetfleece does not fray when cut, so the edges need no hemming.

Can I wash a whole roll of vet bed?

Yes, in principle. A roll is washable at 40°C like any cut piece, greenback can go hotter when a practice needs it, and non-slip should stay at 40°C or below. In practice a 300 × 75 cm roll is heavy once wet and a home washing machine may not take it, so most people cut the roll into mats first and wash those, ideally inside our laundry wash bag to keep loose fibres out of the machine.

Does non-slip vet bedding come as a roll?

Yes. Both of our non-slip fleeces, the Non-Slip Multi Paw Vetfleece and the Non-Slip Camouflage Vetfleece, are sold in the 118in x 30in (300cm x 75cm) roll size in every colourway. The rubber backing grips wooden, tiled and laminate floors and stays put in crates, carriers and car boots, so a non-slip roll is the one to cut for kennel corridors, transport crates and vans.

Which way up does vet bedding go?

Pile side up, backing down. The deep fleece pile is the side your dog lies on: it holds warmth and lets liquid drain down through it so the surface stays drier. The backing goes against the floor, the crate tray or an absorbent pad. On greenback the green woven side faces down, and on non-slip the ribbed rubber side faces down so it can grip the floor or the tray.

How many crate mats will one roll make?

It depends on the crate. Cutting across the 75 cm width, one 300 cm roll gives two mats for a typical 48 in crate at 120 × 75 cm with a 60 × 75 cm piece left over, four mats for a typical 30 in crate at 75 × 50 cm once the width is trimmed, and five mats for a typical 24 in crate at 60 × 45 cm. Measure your own crate tray first, because floor sizes vary between makers.
