A practical chew-resistant pet mattress for dogs that need tougher bedding

The Jenny Wren Chew-Resistant Pet Mattress is designed for dogs that need more practical bedding than a standard soft dog bed can offer.

It is made for everyday homes, crates, cages, kennels, dog handlers, professional dog environments and busy owners who need a mattress that is strong, waterproof and easy to clean.

Some dogs chew bedding. Others dig, scratch, drag beds around, bring in mud, have accidents, or need a simple waterproof resting surface that can be cleaned quickly. This mattress has been designed with those real-life problems in mind.

The outer cover is made from reinforced 500gsm PVC tarpaulin, giving the mattress a tough, waterproof and wipe-clean surface. Inside, the mattress uses upholstery foam to provide a comfortable resting layer for daily use.

Unlike many traditional dog beds, the Jenny Wren mattress avoids unnecessary extras. There are no zips or loose accessories, helping reduce tempting parts that some dogs may chew or tamper with. The design is practical, simple and focused on durability, hygiene and comfort.

Each mattress is made in Kozeepet’s own mill in Bridlington, giving the range a strong British manufacturing story and helping customers buy from a company with hands-on control over its own production.

About brand
Jenny Wren was created from a passion for quality, comfort, and the remarkable natural properties of wool. Having worked with wool in pressure care products for humans, we recognised an opportunity to bring the same level of care, support, and craftsmanship into a premium range of dog bedding designed to suit a variety of needs — whether that’s 100% wool or blended wool options. The brand truly began with our first family dog, Mo, a playful Boxer who inspired us to create something special. Although we had worked with and sold Vetfleece for years, we wanted to make Mo a truly luxurious dog bed using the very best materials we could source. With 100% British wool already in stock, the very first Jenny Wren dog bed was created — and from that moment, the range began to grow. Today, Jenny Wren is proud to offer a collection of premium dog beds, cage pads, roll pads, mattresses, retractable leads, and oval dog beds, all designed with pet wellbeing, comfort, sustainability, and ethical sourcing at their heart. By working with local manufacturers and producing quality beds here in Yorkshire, we are able to maintain the high standards that define the brand. The result is a warm, luxurious, and thoughtfully crafted collection for dog owners who want the very best for their pets.

A waterproof dog crate mattress for crates, cages, vans and travel spaces

A crate mattress needs to be the right size, the right thickness and the right material.

If it is too small, the dog may not have enough resting space. If it is too large, it may bunch up, bend or become uncomfortable inside the crate. If the material is too soft or fabric-based, determined dogs may chew, scratch or dig at it.

The Jenny Wren Chew-Resistant Pet Mattress is available in 10 sizes, making it suitable for a wide range of crates, cages, kennels, car boots, vans and home resting areas.

1. Measure the dog first

Measure the dog while lying in a natural resting position to understand how much room they need to rest comfortably.

2. Measure the crate or cage second

Measure the internal base of the crate or cage, not just the outside.

3. Measure the available floor or travel space

For kennels, utility rooms, car boots and vans, check the exact space where the mattress will sit.

4. Choose the thickness needed

A 2in mattress may suit lower-height spaces, while a 4in mattress may suit larger spaces or customers wanting a deeper resting surface.

The Jenny Wren mattress is especially useful for crates and cages because it has a waterproof outer cover, a sealed design and no zips. This helps make it easier to clean and less tempting for dogs that tend to chew bedding parts.

Whether used in a vet practice, boarding kennel, working vehicle or at home, it offers a simple, hard-wearing bedding option for everyday use.

Size Guide

Dog Mattress & Crate Size Guide

Find the right mat size for your dog’s cage, crate or sleeping space

Choosing the right dog mattress size is simple when you know your crate size or your dog’s measurements. Use this guide to match our mattress sizes to common UK dog cage sizes, learn how to measure properly, and decide what to order if you are unsure.

Quick help before you choose

Size matters more than weight. Dogs with the same weight can have very different shapes. Measure the inside base of the crate for the best mattress fit. If buying for a puppy, think about their adult size and crate setup. If your crate has a number size, use the size chart below to match it.

How our dog mattress sizes line up with crate sizes

In the UK, dog cages are often referred to by both inch size and sometimes by a cage number. Numbering is not perfectly universal across every brand, so the most reliable method is always to check the internal base measurement of your crate.

Cage numbering and internal tray sizes can vary between manufacturers. For the best fit, always measure the internal base of your crate before ordering.

Don’t know your cage number?

No problem. The easiest way to choose the right mattress is to measure the inside floor area of the crate or sleeping space.

Best measuring tip: measure the tray base or internal floor space from inner edge to inner edge, not the outside frame.
  • Measure the internal length of the base.
  • Measure the internal width of the base.
  • Choose the nearest mattress size that fits within those measurements.
  • If you prefer a snug fit, stay close to the exact internal base size.
  • If your crate tapers or has rounded corners, allow a little tolerance.

How to measure your dog if you are choosing by body size

If you do not yet have the crate, or you are buying for a new dog or puppy, you can estimate the correct size by measuring your dog. Your dog should be able to lie down comfortably and sit or stand without feeling cramped.

Step 1: Measure length

With your dog standing on all fours, measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail. Do not include the tail. Add around 2–4 inches depending on the size of your dog to help estimate the minimum sleeping length needed.

Step 2: Measure height

Measure your dog from the top of the head to the ground while sitting. If your dog has upright ears, measure to the tip of the ears. Add around 2–4 inches to allow comfortable clearance.

These are general examples only. Dogs of the same breed can vary in shape, height and length, so use this as a starting point and measure where possible.

Buying for a puppy?

Puppies grow quickly, so it is usually best to think about their adult crate size rather than only their current size. If your puppy will eventually use a larger crate, plan your mattress choice around the final setup you want long-term.

Can a crate be too big?

Yes. Dogs usually prefer a cosy, secure den-like space rather than an area that feels too open. Too much unused space can make the crate feel less secure.

Signs the fit may be wrong

Your dog curls into one end with lots of empty space. Your dog avoids the crate and seeks smaller spaces elsewhere. The mattress shifts around because it is too small. The bed buckles or pushes up at the sides because it is too large.

Simple ordering advice

  • If you know your crate size: choose the matching mattress size from the table.
  • If you do not know your crate size: measure the inside base of the crate and choose the nearest size that fits.
  • If you do not have the crate yet: measure your dog and use breed guidance as a starting point.

Chew Resistant Design

Fewer Tempting Weak Points

Made to Reduce the Parts Dogs Commonly Chew

Dogs often damage beds by finding a weak point: a zip, loose fabric, raised seam, soft corner or dangling part. This mattress is designed to keep the shape simple and practical, helping reduce the areas a dog may try to grab or pull.

  • No zip for a dog to focus on

  • No loose accessories or dangling extras

  • Tough reinforced 500gsm PVC tarpaulin outer cover

  • Simple mattress design to help reduce chew temptation

Chew-Resistant, Not Chew-Proof

This mattress is designed to be tougher and less tempting than many standard soft dog beds, but no bed can be guaranteed as indestructible.

If a dog is highly determined to destroy bedding, there is very little that can completely stop them. The best results usually come from choosing a tougher design, introducing the bed carefully and monitoring early use.

Make the New Bed Smell Familiar

Help Your Dog Settle

To help your dog become accustomed to their new bed, we recommend rubbing their toys or blanket over the mattress before first use.

This helps the bed smell familiar to them, which may reduce uncertainty and could help lower the chance of them chewing, scratching or damaging it when it is first introduced.
